Chris Nicholson's Writing Weblog

Yesterday the New York Times Book Review published a list of the Best Work[s] of American Fiction of the Last 25 Years. For the top spot, the panel of writers and editors chose Beloved, by Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison.
What I find interesting is that I've read none of the books listed. Not one. And I thought I was relatively well-read.
Thinking about it more, I realize that since college I've focused mainly on reading classic American literature: Hemingway, Steinbeck, Fitzgerald, Barry.
Perhaps it's time to give some of the new stuff a try.

A new book, The American Civil War: 365 Days, features more than 500 photographs and illustrations from the American Civil War, many of which have never been published or publicly viewed.
For more on the book, see CNN.com's article "Congressional library offers rare look at Civil War."

I've been pretty busy with some writing and editing projects, along with doing a lot of work on my website.
I'll be traveling for the next week, driving cross-country with Mom to collect my little brother from college in Arizona. We'll take our time on the way home to Connecticut, stopping perhaps at Bryce Canyon National Park, Denver and the new baseball stadium in St. Louis. At the very least, somewhere in the South or Midwest I'll be eating a chicken fried steak dinner. You just can't get a good one in New England.
When I get home, I'll be posting updates here about writing I've had published, books I've read, and articles I've found interesting.
