OMG

Just released:

A 13-year-old girl from Pennsylvania has won the inaugural LG National Texting Championship. Yep, it was a text-messaging race.

Morgan Pozgar claimed her prize of — ready for this? — $25,000 by texting the word "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" in just 15 seconds.

See the story on CNN.com. For a pre-Final interview with the runner-up, see the Information Week article "13-Year-Old Gets Thumbs Up At LG National Texting Championship."

Campus Beat

Being a former college-newspaper editor, I find myself still interested in any national news revolving around campus publishing. Those stories usually involve editors who are being censored; little else about college papers makes headlines.

Yesterday, however, Editor & Publisher ran a great piece about Amie Steele, the editor-in-chief of Collegiate Times, the daily newspaper at Virginia Tech. Steele's leadership in covering the tragic shootings earlier this week allowed the newspaper to scoop the mainstream media on many of the details of the unfolding story.

For more, read "Editor of Virginia Tech Paper: On Scooping the Major Media."

That Time of the Year

Yesterday the annual list of Pulitzer Prize winners was announced. Again, I wasn't on it.

See Pulitzer.org for a list of the 2007 winners.

Broken Cradle

About half an hour ago, news began circulating that author Kurt Vonnegut passed away last night in New York City.

The Charlotte Observer appears to be the first publication to have an extensive article posted: "Kurt Vonnegut, a cosmic, comic novelist, dies at 84."

Believe it or not, I haven't read any of Vonnegut's books. I'll make it a point to do so this summer.

Old Words

Adding to the Internet's trove of information, Harper's Magazine has unleashed its full 157-year articles archive onto the World Wide Web.

Full access to the archive requires a $17/year subscription, which lets you surf through articles written for the magazine by literary luminaries such as Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, E.E. "Not e.e." Cummings and Dave Barry.

For more information, see the Harper's blog.

His Serve

According to an article in the New York Post, retired tennis pro Andre Agassi is writing a book. (See "Agassi Book Aces $5M.")

I wonder if he'll mention the three times we met but didn't speak.

A Final Picture

O.K., I'm a bit backed up here, so let's get rollin'. (Work's been a bit busy — over a dozen deadlines in the past three weeks.)

The cover for the next and final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Gallows, has been released. You can see it (and read more about it) at Guardian Unlimited.

On a related note, you can check out the preview for the next Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, at HarryPotter.com.
